About the artist
Nicola Henry is an illustrator and comic maker from Glasgow. She enjoys drawing people, both real and imagined. After graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2018, she has developed her illustration practise with a focus on zines, comics and other forms of sequential imagery. Her work frequently tells stories of unusual characters in strange situations, combining elements of fantasy with real-life mundanity. She takes inspiration from a variety of sources, including old sci-fi novels, dogs and Gilmore Girls. She can often be found at home, listening to conspiracy theory podcasts and playing with dolls.
In their own words:
"This comic was created in my local park during lockdown. The story was heavily influenced by old serialised adventure comics. I also drew lots of style inspiration from the children's television programmes created by Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate in the 60s and 70s. The work was acheived by photographing cardboard cut-out models of the characters, using nature as the backdrop. By using photography, I aimed to create a sense of vastness in contrast to the hand drawn characters."
